FULL HISTORY OF BALBOA BY:

Bobby White

This Balboa Peninsula area was once the mecca of dancing in Southern California.
Dancers would take the train and carpool down to the famous Rendezvous Ballroom.

The ballroom was so crowded that all they could do was stay close together and shuffle their feet,
and thus the "Balboa" was born.

The Balboa Rendezvous event is your one chance a year to make that trip done by thousands
of dancers in the past when this dance was invented.

The Historic Balboa Pavilion is now the only remaining ballroom on the Peninsula.
This amazing facility has stood the test of time.  Built in 1905, the facility had many uses
over the years and was a key to keeping Balboa dancing alive in the 70s/80s before closing down.

The Pavilion was closed down for many years and reopened the day after the inaugural Balboa Rendezvous in 2002.
